White House Warns 50% Tariff on U.S. Imports of Brazilian Products

In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on July 9, President Trump said his administration would impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian products imported into the U.S., effective 12:01 a.m. ET, Aug. 1

The letter was made public by President Trump through a Truth Social post.

Among criticizing President Lula for the country’s investigations of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, President Trump said the proposed 50% tariff is “far less than what is needed to have the Level Playing Field we must have with your Country.”

The White House encouraged Brazil to work with U.S. trade agreement negotiators to reach an agreement before the Aug. 1 tariff deadline.

The NCBFAA Customs Committee and Counsel of Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A., will provide members with additional details related to these tariffs and CBP guidance, as it is received.
