As first reported by International Trade Today (ITT), President Trump late yesterday evening, July 10, sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that the U.S. is prepared to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, effective 12:01 a.m. ET, Aug. 1.
President Trump warned that transshipped goods would face even higher tariffs.
Highlighting fentanyl and “non-tariff barriers” from Canada, President Trump also noted the 400% tariff that Canada has imposed on U.S. dairy products. “If Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,” President Trump wrote.
The NCBFAA Customs Committee and Counsel of Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A., will provide members with additional details related to these tariffs and CBP guidance, as it is received.
